truth: pray for amanda de lange

9 Feb

This afternoon, I was driving and listening to “Truth” by Balmorhea. Usually, it’s a happy song, or at least I think it’s a triumphant song. I was sure of it until now.

Lately, all I can think about is Amanda de Lange. Amanda is the executive director of Starfish Foster Home in Xi’an, China. I first met her in May 2011 on a humanitarian trip and I met her again in October and November 2011. This past week, she was diagnosed with cancer. I couldn’t believe it. Amanda has dedicated her life saving hundreds of starfish babies and now her life is on the line. Thinking of her current health makes me terribly sad and it’s something I don’t quite understand at the moment.

I was listening to “Truth” and suddenly, I didn’t know if the music was truly happy or sad. I know there’s the major and minor chords, but there was something beyond theory. In a space alone and driving on the highway under a blanket of gray sky, it truly felt as if the music was crying alongside my soul.

echoes of the past

I’ve been listening to instrumental songs all day and listening to Truth by Balmorhea has brought me to silence, contemplating over someone I have loved and realizing everyday bravery in the world exists.
